Mountains of the Moon Hiking Tour Plan
Your mountains of the moon hiking expedition begins with a picturesque 6-7 hour drive from Kampala/Entebbe through western Uganda's rolling hills and tea plantations. Stop in Fort Portal for lunch before continuing to the mountain base near Kasese. Spend your first evening at a comfortable lodge, where your guide will brief you on the upcoming trek while you enjoy views of the snow-capped peaks at sunset.
After breakfast, transfer to the trailhead at Mihunga (1,650m). Begin your ascent through dense bamboo forests, home to chattering monkeys and colorful birds. The trail steepens as you reach Nyakalengija (2,450m), where you'll spend the night in a mountain hut, listening to the sounds of the forest under starry skies.
Today's 6-8 hour hike reveals the Rwenzori's surreal beauty. Pass through giant lobelia and groundsel plants in the "Valley of Splendor," with panoramic views of Mount Baker and Mount Stanley. Reach John Matte Hut (3,414m), where the thinning air and dramatic landscapes make for unforgettable sunset photography.
Wake to glacial winds before descending through the Nyamwamba Valley. Cross crystal-clear streams and moss-covered rocks, spotting rare Rwenzori turacos along the way. Celebrate your trek's completion with a hearty dinner back at base camp, sharing stories of your alpine adventure.
After breakfast, bid farewell to the mountains and drive back to Kampala (or Entebbe Airport for departures). The journey offers final glimpses of rural Uganda, with stops at craft markets to purchase souvenirs made by local communities.
