Your trek begins early in the morning at the park headquarters in Kinigi, where you’ll be assigned to a specific gorilla family and briefed by experienced guides. The hike can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours depending on the gorillas' location, traversing steep, muddy terrain. Once the group locates the gorillas, you'll spend a magical time observing them as they eat, play, groom, and interact. All gorilla trekking in Rwanda takes place in Volcanoes National Park, located in the country’s northwest near the town of Musanze. As of now, the cost is per person and is subject to change, and only a limited number are issued daily to reduce environmental impact. Permits are non-transferable and include park entrance, guiding services, and the one-hour gorilla viewing. Booking through a registered tour operator or directly through the Rwanda Development Board is strongly recommended due to high demand and limited availability.
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is available year-round, but the dry seasons offer the most favorable conditions.
June to September and mid-December to February are ideal, with less rainfall and clearer hiking trails.
However, the wet seasons (March–May and October–November) often provide lush, green backdrops and fewer tourists.
