Overview
This 3-day birding safari is ideal for travelers with limited time who want to experience Uganda’s top birding hotspots. From the wetlands of Mabamba Swamp to the forested trails of Kibale, the itinerary maximizes sightings of both iconic and rare species through guided walks, boat cruises, and strategic transfers.
Tour Plan
On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be met by your professional birding guide and then transfer to Mabamba Swamp, this is one of the famous places for birding worldwide and it takes you sight one of the unusual bird the shoebill. The swamp is most accessible by canoe, which you’ll paddle through narrow papyrus channels that open onto broad lagoons. This is the heartland of that mythical bird of Africa, the superb Shoebill Stork. During the journey you can also see African Jacanas deftly walking over water lilies, Pied and Malachite Kingfishers with their electric blue and red flashes, and Purple Swamphens lurking in the reeds. Enjoy a morning of birding before lunch, then start a scenic drive to Kibale Forest (approximately 5 hrs drive). Along the way, you will call at wetlands and tea gardens for further bird-watching, with the chance to spot species like the Papyrus Gonolek and the Grey-headed Kingfisher. Late in the evening drive to a forest edge lodge for dinner and overnight.
Wake up to sound of forest birds and spend full day exploring Kibale National Park, one of Uganda’s primate paradise and one of Africa’s richest birding destination. Kibale has the highest concentration of primates of any park in East Africa. pubg_sam The park contains a minimum of 330 species of birds including six that are endemic to the Albertine Rift region. Follow the forest trails on guided walks, looking up into the giants of the forest canopy for sightings of the African Green Broadbill, Green-breasted Pitta and the impressive Great Blue Turaco to name a few. Other potential sightings are Black Bee-eaters, Yellow-billed Barbets, and White-naped Pigeons. The Thick Jungle also houses primates such as the Red Colobus Monkey as well as Chimpanzees as you stroll through the forest during the birding walks. Habitat variety - swamps, dense forest etc. ensures a full day of birding and shooting sports! Dine and spend the night back at your lodge in the evening.
Go on an early morning birding walk after breakfast at the lodge or in Kibale Forest you have the opportunity to see any species that eluded you then like the Grey Parrot, Afep Pigeon and the Scaly-breasted Illadopsis. Leave Kibale and start heading back to Entebbe, about 6 hour drive with birding en route. Time dependent on your flight time you may get some roadside habitat or farmland birding. After breakfast, transfer back to Entebbe International Airport for your afternoon departure thereby marking the end of your 3-day birding tour in Uganda.
