Overview
This 10-Day Uganda Birding Safari provides you with an opportunity to visit Uganda’s best birding habitats, such as papyrus swamps and mystical shrub lands, tropical rainforests, and alpine areas. Bird watchers will find over 1000 bird species, including the hard-to-find Shoebill Stork, endemics of the Albertine Rift, and forest and savannah inhabitants. By combining guided walks, boat trips, and game drives, we guarantee the highest number of birdwatching opportunities possible.
Tour Plan
We start the morning at the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters for the standard briefing from the ranger and a small stretch. From the beat of the trail, you’re enclosed in tall bamboo arches, swallowing cool morning mist, the forest humming a morning welcome.
The steep is slow but clear, the path slipping below, this is the habitat of the golden monkey, their blurred slides out of view, and the odd gorilla footprint appearing gently on the wet ground underfoot. While hiking, the ranger tells stories about despite volcanic eruptions, game deadlines, and the traditional uses of bamboo by early smock-making settlers. As the altitude ascends and the vegetation turns into highland moorland, giant lobelia plants appear along the trail like alien guests, warning you that you cannot be far from the crater. At the top, stand quietly in a basin where a circular bog lies enclosed by delicate grass and misty ridges. Have a picnic, a steaming drink, a prowl on the playing dock, capture zoom-eyed panoramas, and just breathe. On clear days, you can see the bold profile of Sabyinyo’s serrated ridges and the rise of Muhabura’s perfect cone.
With bodies fueled and spirits high, start the descent back through the lobelia gardens and down into the cool bamboo zone. The pace is easier, and wildlife sightings make the return journey more enjoyable. Guides will point out medicinal plants, volcanic rock formations, and traces of primate activity along the slopes.
Back at the trailhead, switch from mountain mode to culture mode. Visit the Batwa community, who are the original forest people, who lived inside these volcanic forests long before the national park was established. Expect warm singing welcomes, lively dances, storytelling from the older generation, traditional fire-making demonstrations, ancient hunting techniques, and practical lessons on how people still live in harmony with the forest.
The experience feels personal, moving, and respectful and offers a window into a heritage shaped by the mountains and protected by cultural tourism. Return to your lodge, a happy heart, and a new appreciation of Uganda’s volcano country.
